The Life of a Digital Nomad: Finding a New Community

Last month was about getting involved in the community where my long housesit is, and starting new endeavours, expanding my horizons from the comfort of a beautiful house.

My little island went from winter wonderland and power outages to the first truly warm sunny days and signs of spring. So I survived about 38 hours without power and then witnessed the garden starting to bloom.

A surprise winter storm

Surprisingly (or not), March was the kind of month that feels like it easily could have been two whole months.

I had good friends visiting every weekend, hopped on the mainland a couple times and had a dozen different projects, volunteering opportunities and work contracts.

I found a new favourite hike and cidery, tried a new restaurant and explored new neighbourhoods.

I also met a lot of locals and made new friends by offering my help and services around the island, and by going to the pub many times for the live music! But I also said aurevoir to friends moving back East, witnessing my Squamish community changing yet again.

I was asked quite a few times if I wanted to move here. I was offered help finding a place to stay, and work, should I decide to settle in the Bowen community.

The storm left many broken trees and branches

It's been such a warm and welcoming feeling! But... I am a mountain girl, not an island girl. And the anticipation to move on has been slowly building.

So April shall be a little less stable. But just a little... perhaps easing back into my more active nomadic ways.

I fell into my planning mode a couple times and noticed a new trend: so far this year, I've been planning my life about 3 months ahead of time. That is quite a big contrast with last year, when I was planning just one month at a time!

Marvin and I

Therefore, at the end of March, I already know where I'll be at the end of June... well almost. I've got it figured out until June 19!

And an interesting opportunity to housesit somewhere I had not considered going to at all this year has come up. But more on that later!

For now, I'm focusing on my next step, which will be moving just over the water. And I'm focusing a lot of my energy on a new part-time work contract that is nicely aligned with my values, hoping to impress and create a long-term professional relationship. 💜
